Section 1: About the League
What is the Do Right League?
The Do Right League is an amateur adult basketball league focused on fair competition, teamwork, physical fitness, fellowship, respect, and good sportsmanship.
When is the upcoming season?
The upcoming season is the Fall 2026 Men’s Basketball League.
What is the league format?
The season will include a regular season followed by playoffs. The total number of regular-season games will be announced before the season begins.
Where will schedules and league updates be posted?
Schedules, playoff information, announcements, and other updates may be provided through:
The league app;
Email;
The Do Right League website; and
The league’s official Facebook page.
All participants are encouraged to download the league app and check it regularly.
Section 2: Player Eligibility
Who may participate?
The Do Right League welcomes amateur adult players who:
Played basketball in high school;
Did not play organized basketball in high school;
Played no more than one or two years of college basketball;
Want to join or organize a team;
Want to return to playing basketball; or
Want to remain active and improve their fitness.
What is the minimum age to participate?
Players must be at least 18 years old before participating in a league game.
The age requirement may only be waived in writing by the league director. Game officials may not independently waive this requirement.
May former college players participate?
A player may participate if the player competed in college basketball for no more than two years and did not play for an NCAA Division I team.
May former semi-professional or professional players participate?
No. Individuals who currently play, or have previously played, in a semi-professional or professional basketball league are not eligible.
Why does the league limit certain playing experience?
The eligibility requirements help promote fair play, balanced competition, participant safety, and an enjoyable recreational experience.
What happens if false eligibility information is provided?
Providing false, incomplete, or misleading information may result in:
Removal from a game;
Suspension;
Removal from the league;
Disciplinary action against the team; and
Forfeiture of registration fees.
Section 3: Ministry and Non-Ministry Teams
What qualifies as a ministry team?
A ministry team must represent a current and active church or ministry. Each player and coach listed on the roster must be an active member of the ministry being represented.
Can a team participate without representing a ministry?
Yes. Non-ministry teams are welcome, provided that every player and coach meets the league’s eligibility, registration, identification, and conduct requirements.
Can participants create their own teams?
Yes. Eligible participants may organize and register their own teams. Every player and coach must complete registration and meet all league qualifications.
Section 4: Registration and Identification
What information must be provided during registration?
Registration information must be complete and accurate. Participants must provide their full legal name and all requested contact, eligibility, team, and identification information.
Is a photograph required?
Yes. Each player and coach must upload a recent, clear photograph showing the full face.
The photograph should be:
Taken from the front;
Well-lit and in focus;
Free from filters;
Taken without sunglasses or hats; and
Free from anything that covers or disguises the face.
Will identification be checked?
Yes. At the team’s first game, every player and coach must present a valid government-issued photo ID.
The name and photograph on the ID must match the registration information and photograph uploaded during registration.
Can the league verify a participant’s identity and playing history?
Yes. The Do Right League reserves the right to verify the identity, age, eligibility, and playing history of any registered player or coach.
What happens if a player or coach cannot provide identification?
The individual may not be permitted to participate until the league verifies the person’s identity and registration information.
Registering under another person’s identity or providing false information may result in removal from the league without a refund.
Section 5: Teams and Rosters
How many players may be listed on a team?
Each roster must include:
A minimum of five registered players; and
A maximum of nineteen registered players.
When must the roster be submitted?
Each team must submit a complete and accurate roster before its first scheduled game.
A team that plays without an approved roster may be required to forfeit the game.
What is the deadline for adding players?
Eligible, fully registered, and paid players may be added through August 27, 2026.
Players may only be added after the deadline with approval from the league director.
Can an injured player be replaced after the deadline?
A team with only five to seven registered players may request permission to replace a player who suffers a serious or long-term injury.
The team must provide reasonable proof of the injury. The league director will make the final decision.
The replacement player must complete all registration, payment, eligibility, and identification requirements before participating.
How many players are required to begin a game?
A team must have at least four eligible players present and ready to play.
A team with only four players at the scheduled start time must begin the game with four players.
What happens if a team does not have four players?
A team that does not have at least four eligible players within five minutes after the scheduled start time will forfeit the game.
What happens if a team does not appear for a scheduled game?
Failure to appear will result in an automatic forfeit. Repeated failures to appear may result in additional penalties or removal from the league without a refund.
Can late-arriving players participate?
Yes. A late-arriving player may participate without penalty if the player is listed on the approved roster.
The player may not enter the game until the scorekeeper or another authorized league representative verifies the player’s identity and eligibility.
What happens if a team is reduced to three players?
A team must have at least four eligible players on the court to continue a game. If a team is reduced to three players for any reason, including injuries, fouls, ejections, or disqualifications, the team will forfeit the game.
Section 6: Coaches and Team Managers
Does each team need a team manager?
Yes. Each team must designate one team manager. The team manager may be the coach or assistant coach.
The manager may be designated for the entire season or before each game.
What are the team manager’s responsibilities?
The team manager is responsible for:
Ensuring registration forms and rosters are accurate;
Providing each participant’s full legal name;
Communicating with game officials;
Reporting scorebook or scoreboard concerns;
Helping manage the conduct of players and spectators; and
Providing the identity of any player who receives a technical foul or is ejected.
Should teams have a non-playing coach?
Teams should have a non-playing adult coach or assistant coach on the bench throughout each game.
Who may speak with game officials?
Only the designated coach or assistant coach may communicate with officials on behalf of the team.
The team manager may respectfully ask for clarification about a rule but may not argue or repeatedly question an official’s judgment call.
Does the league determine how much playing time each player receives?
No. The Do Right League will not direct a coach regarding:
When a player enters or leaves the game;
How much playing time a player receives;
When a team uses a full-court press; or
Other lawful coaching strategies.
These decisions are the responsibility of the team’s coach.
Section 7: Uniforms and Equipment
Are team uniforms required?
Each team must wear jerseys or shirts of the same or a closely matching color during every game, including the first game.
Matching T-shirts are acceptable if they meet all numbering requirements.
What are the jersey-number requirements?
Each player must have a clearly visible and permanent number that is:
At least six inches high;
Legible; and
Consistent throughout the game.
Permanent fabric-marker numbers are permitted if they are neat and readable. Numbers made with tape are not permitted.
What is the penalty for an improper jersey?
A player whose jersey or shirt does not meet league requirements may receive a technical foul before entering the game.
Technical fouls issued only for jersey violations will not count toward season suspension totals unless league leadership determines otherwise.
Is dunking allowed?
No. Dunking, intentionally striking the backboard, and grabbing or hanging on the rim are prohibited and may result in a technical foul.
An official may excuse brief contact with the rim when necessary to prevent an injury.
Section 8: Game Format and Time
How long is each game?
Each game will consist of:
Two 16-minute halves; and
A four-minute halftime.
Does the game clock run continuously?
The clock will generally run continuously but may stop for:
Timeouts;
Free throws;
Fouls or violations;
Injuries requiring an extended stoppage;
Unnecessary delays;
Scorekeeper or clock corrections; or
Other unusual circumstances determined by the officials.
What happens if the game is tied?
A tied game will proceed to a five-minute overtime period.
Additional overtime periods may be played until a winner is determined unless the league announces a different procedure for a particular event.
How many timeouts does each team receive?
Each team will receive:
Three one-minute timeouts; and
Three 30-second timeouts during regulation.
Each team will receive one additional timeout for every overtime period. Unused regulation timeouts may be carried into overtime.
When may substitutions be made?
Substitutions may be made during a dead-ball situation after the substitute reports to the scorer’s table and is recognized by an official.
A player may not enter the court without authorization.
How is the ball put into play?
A jump ball will be used to begin the game.
Other held-ball or jump-ball situations will be determined by the alternating-possession arrow.
Officials will administer the ball following each whistle.
Can a team advance the ball to the frontcourt after a timeout?
Yes. During the final 59.9 seconds of regulation and during any overtime period, a team may advance the ball to the frontcourt by calling a timeout immediately after the opposing team makes a basket.
The ball will be placed in the frontcourt at the location designated by the game official.
Section 9: Scorekeeping
What information must be entered into the scorebook?
Each player’s first and last name and jersey number must be entered into the official scorebook using the approved roster.
Which scorebook is official?
The scorebook maintained at the scorer’s table is the official record of:
The game score;
Team fouls;
Individual fouls; and
Other authorized game information.
Teams may maintain their own scorebooks and statistics, but the scorer’s-table record will control if a disagreement occurs.
What statistics will the official scorekeeper track?
The official scorekeeper may track:
Field goals made;
Three-point field goals made;
Free throws made; and
Free throws attempted.
Teams may independently track additional statistics.
What should a team do if it believes the score is incorrect?
The designated team manager should notify an official immediately.
If a team requests that play be stopped to investigate a possible error and no error is found, the team may be charged with a timeout.
Section 10: Game Officials
Who provides the officials?
Officials are contracted through an independent officiating organization and are not employees of the Do Right League.
Officials are expected to enforce league rules while treating players, coaches, spectators, scorekeepers, and league representatives professionally and respectfully.
How many officials will work each game?
The league may schedule two or three officials, depending on the game and the decision of the league director.
If the full number of scheduled officials is unavailable, a game may be played with one or two officials and will remain an official game.
Can a game be replayed because fewer officials were present?
No. Once a game begins, it is considered an official game and will not be replayed solely because fewer officials were available than originally scheduled.
Can officials correct scorekeeping mistakes?
Yes. Officials may correct confirmed mistakes involving the scorebook, scoreboard, foul count, or game clock.
How many challenges does each team receive?
Each team may request up to two challenges during a game when the team believes an official’s call involves a clear and significant error that is eligible for review.
The team manager or designated coach must request the challenge before play resumes.
What happens if a team loses a challenge?
If a challenge is unsuccessful and the original call is upheld, the team will lose the right to request any additional challenges during that game.
If the challenge is successful, the call may be corrected, and the team may use its remaining available challenge later in the game.
The game officials or league representative will make the final decision following the review.
Section 11: Personal, Technical, and Flagrant Fouls
How many personal fouls result in disqualification?
A player who receives five personal fouls will be disqualified from the remainder of the game.
A technical foul also counts as a personal foul toward the five-foul limit.
What is the penalty for a technical foul?
A technical foul will result in:
Two free-throw attempts for the opposing team; and
Possession of the ball for the opposing team at midcourt.
What happens if a player receives two technical fouls in one game?
The player will be immediately ejected and suspended for a minimum of one additional game.
Technical fouls issued only for jersey violations are excluded from this suspension rule.
What happens if a player receives three technical fouls during the season?
The player will be suspended for the remainder of the season, including playoffs and postseason activities, unless the league grants a written waiver.
What happens if a team accumulates six technical fouls?
A team that accumulates six individual or team technical fouls during the season may be removed from the league for the remainder of the regular season and postseason.
Jersey-violation technical fouls are excluded from this total.
What is considered misinformation about a technical foul?
Misinformation includes:
Refusing to provide the offending player’s full name;
Providing a false name;
Misrepresenting the identity of a player; or
Attempting to play a suspended, ineligible, or unregistered player.
Such conduct may result in the suspension or removal of the player, coach, or team.
What is a flagrant foul?
A flagrant foul involves excessive, violent, dangerous, threatening, or severely unacceptable conduct.
Examples include:
Striking or punching;
Kicking or kneeing;
Using excessive force;
Attempting to injure someone;
Physically intimidating another person; or
Engaging in severe unsportsmanlike conduct.
A player who receives a flagrant foul will be ejected. Additional suspension will be determined by league leadership.
A flagrant foul also counts as a technical foul.
Section 12: Free Throws and Goaltending
What happens when a player is fouled during a three-point attempt?
A player fouled during an unsuccessful three-point attempt will receive three free throws when a three-point line is available.
If the player makes the three-point shot while being fouled, the basket will count and the player will receive one additional free throw.
When may players enter the lane during a free throw?
Players occupying marked lane spaces may enter the lane after the ball leaves the shooter’s hand.
All other players must follow the officials’ instructions and applicable free-throw restrictions.
What is considered goaltending?
Goaltending occurs when a defensive player touches a shot while the ball is descending toward the basket and has a reasonable opportunity to enter the goal.
For example, if the ball is descending toward the basket and a defensive player touches it, causing it to miss or go out of bounds, the play will be considered goaltending.
What is the penalty for defensive goaltending?
Defensive goaltending will result in an automatic award of 2 points to the offensive team.
Under the Do Right League’s rules, the two points may be awarded even when the goaltending violation was not initially called by the referee, provided that the violation is confirmed through an authorized review or challenge.
Section 13: Fighting and Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Is fighting allowed?
No. Fighting will not be tolerated.
Anyone who participates in, encourages, escalates, or leaves the bench to join a fight may be:
Removed from the facility;
Suspended;
Permanently expelled from the league; or
Reported to facility security or law enforcement.
No refund will be provided following disciplinary action related to fighting.
What conduct may result in a technical foul?
Examples include:
Using profanity;
Repeatedly disputing judgment calls;
Disruptive bench behavior;
Abusive spectator language;
Taunting or baiting;
Making personal or degrading comments;
Attempting to intimidate another person; or
Refusing to follow an official’s reasonable instruction.
Can spectator behavior affect the team?
Yes. Misconduct by a spectator associated with a team may result in a team technical foul or other disciplinary action.
The team manager is responsible for helping manage the behavior of the team’s players, coaches, bench personnel, and associated spectators.
What happens if someone intentionally touches an official?
Intentional physical contact with an official may result in:
Immediate ejection;
Permanent removal from the league;
Removal from the facility; and
Notification of facility security or law enforcement.
Can a team be removed for poor sportsmanship?
Yes. A team that repeatedly displays poor sportsmanship, disruptive conduct, or disrespect toward officials may be suspended or removed from the league with forfeiture of all fees.
Section 14: Facility Rules
Are alcohol, drugs, smoking, or vaping permitted?
No. The following are prohibited during all Do Right League activities and at all facilities being used by the league:
Alcohol;
Illegal drugs;
Tobacco products;
Smoking; and
Vaping products.
Anyone who appears to be under the influence or possesses a prohibited substance may be denied entry, removed, suspended, or expelled.
Section 15: Refunds, Discipline, and League Authority
Are refunds provided after disciplinary removal?
No. A player or team that is suspended, expelled, or removed because of misconduct, false information, ineligibility, fighting, or another disciplinary matter will not receive a refund.
Can the league change its rules?
Yes. The Do Right League reserves the right to interpret, revise, add, remove, or modify any rule or policy when league leadership determines that a change is necessary to promote:
Safety;
Fairness;
Good sportsmanship;
Orderly competition; or
The best interests of the league.
Which document controls if the FAQ and official rules are different?
This FAQ is a general summary. The official registration terms, eligibility requirements, code of conduct, league policies, and current rulebook will control if a difference or conflict exists.
Each numbered section can be placed in a separate website accordion, with the individual questions expanding beneath the section heading.
Section 15: Grievances
How can a team or player submit a grievance?
A team or player who has a concern regarding league administration, eligibility, conduct, officiating procedures, or another league matter may submit a formal grievance.
Team-related grievances should normally be submitted by the team manager or coach. An individual player may also submit a grievance involving a matter that directly affects that player.
The grievance should clearly include:
- The name of the team or player;
- The date and game involved;
- A description of what occurred;
- The individuals involved; and
- The resolution being requested.
The Do Right League will review, address, and provide a response to the grievance within two business days after it is received.
